‘Lego Batman’ Spinoff Movie on the Fast Track to 2017

'The Lego Movie'
No one thought it would be possible to make a good movie about Lego toys, but Chris Miller and Phil Lord made us eat our words in a major way with "The Lego Movie." We could be cynical about the just-announced "Lego Batman" movie that’s headed to theaters in 2017, but we’ve learned our lesson when it comes to doubting that dynamic film-making duo.

It’s true. So excited. #Darkness #NoParents http://ift.tt/1vcoIyA

Will Arnett will reprise his role as the growly superhero and supremely bad boyfriend. Arnett’s Batman was delightful in small doses, so it will be interesting to see how the character is handled in a stand-alone story rather than as a foil to the lovable Emmet (Chris Pratt) and general scene-stealer.

Warner Bros. is putting "Lego Batman" on the fast track, for release in 2017. The "Ninjago" spin-off is still slated for September 23, 2016, but the sequel has been pushed back in favor of "Batman." Animator Chris McKay will be in the director’s chair, with a script by Seth Grahame-Smith ("Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"). Lord and Miller will be on board as producers.

If you have Netflix, you can check out Arnett’s latest work on "Bojack Horseman," a weirdly depressing animated series about a washed-up TV star who’s also a horse.
