After years of development, Lucasfilm’s animated musical “Strange Magic” finally has a release date.

The film, based on a story by none other than “Star Wars” mastermind and onetime Lucasfilm head George Lucas, is set for release on January 23, 2015. Per Variety, “Strange Magic” is “a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ with popular songs from the past six decades used to help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion.”

And Lucas isn’t the only big name attached to the project. The star-studded cast is stacked with Broadway and Hollywood heavyweights, including Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein, Peter Stormare, and newcomer Meredith Anne Bull.

“Strange Magic” has actually been in production since Disney purchased Lucasfilm back in late 2012. It’s directed by Gary Rydstrom (“Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation”), who also co-wrote the film with David Berenbaum (“Elf“) and Irene Mecchi (“Brave,” “The Lion King”). Marius de Vries (“Moulin Rouge“) is the musical director and composer.

Sadly, the official announcement of “Strange Magic” puts to rest rumors that the film was actually a “Frozen” follow-up in disguise. The internet was abuzz when Disney reserved the domain name only a few days ago, sparking speculation that the flick was a sequel to last year’s animated hit.

Still, “Strange Magic” sounds pretty great on its own merits. We can’t wait for 2015.
